How to describe this cake. First off, let me tell you that I made it couple times already and it's always been a hit. Now I get requests to make it. I have first talk about this cake on October 5th, 2006 when my brother was visiting me in Nova Scotia. He drooled over it.
Since I haven't review this cake in English I decided to make one today, just to share the recipe with you.
Why do I call it the 'Ultimate Cake'? I guess it's because this was the first thing that comes to my mind when I think about it.
This cake is made with dates puree. You are all familiar with the famous Queen Elizabeth Cake. This cake uses the dates puree, the flour, sugar, eggs etc., similar to the Queen, but is has a twist. You add cocoa powder to the mixture.
The Queen Elizabeth Cake has a caramel sauce on top and sometimes people will add coconut. If using nuts, I usually mix them in the Queen's mixture. In this cake, you'll be topping your cake with nuts than you'll add a layer of chocolate chips and pour on top the Caramel Sauce. You have to reserve some of the sauce to serve with the cake. Add some ice cream if you wish and you have the 'Ultimate Cake'. All of your guests will leave home wanting the recipe.
This cake freezes really well also. So keep couple pieces in the freezer for those unexpected guests
RECIPE
I'm drooling. What a great combo.

ReplyDeleteThat cake looks fit for royalty! Beautiful! And the new look for the blog looks great, as well!
ReplyDeleteThat cake looks amazing! I really like the caramel sauce dripping down the sides. I have been meaning to try baking with dates. Bookmarked to try.
ReplyDeleteMy brother in law makes a delicious Queen Elizabeth Cake...but his Peach Pie is to die for!!!!!!!!!!! I would love to try it with the caramel sauce!!
ReplyDeleteIsa: Merci, c'est très gentil.
ReplyDeleteGlamah16: So good that I'm still having a piece at 9 p.m.
T.W. Barritt: Thanks I'm starting to like the new look.
Kevin: If you were my neighbor I would send you a piece.
Val: You have to make him this cake and see what he thinks about it compare to the Queen. Both are great cakes.
Delicious - I have been looking for something to do with all the dates I see here in Cairo - thanks.
ReplyDeleteIt looks orgasmically scrumptious!!!! Very dirty (understand "highly delicious")! I am now drooling...
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Rosa
Helene, this looks like an "avalanache of yummy-ness".
ReplyDeleteThat does sound like a very tasty cake. I just love how cooking dates renders out this lucious honeyed flavor, which I bet really makes this cake something special. I'll have to try this out
ReplyDeleteThis looks so decadent! And I love anything covered in caramel!
ReplyDeletethat looks like an amazing cake! i have perhaps a stupid question. in your description, you mention a date puree, but in the recipe, it appears that you just boil the (whole?) dates for a while, then add the baking soda. am i missing something - do the dates need to be pureed or chopped finely before beginning?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous: what a great question. I forgot to mention that once that are cooled off I take a fork and gently puree them with the fork.
ReplyDeleteLynda: I wish I could have access to all of your dates in Cairo. I would also make my Queen Elizabeth Cake. I love using dates in desserts.
Rosa: En effet c'est un dessert 'très, très cochon'.
Peter: I just wish that we could all be neighbors and share our food.
Mike: This is unbelievable how this cake is moist. Also the next day I just cut a piece and microwave it few seconds with the caramel sauce. It's heaven.
Deborah: you can even eat the caramel by it's own. I have to hide it because my son keeps looking for it in the fridge and he eats it by spoonfuls.
I love baking with dates! Sounds kind of like the Nutella cupcakes I made a while back! This does look ULTIMATE. :)
ReplyDeleteI love reading about cake! I think it's my most favorite subject. This one looks beautiful. I love the picture, which the dripping caramel.
ReplyDeletewow, that does sound and look incredible. I have to try it!

What a sinful looking cake. Nice recipe too with dates in it. Just wondering if it becomes too sweet , with the choc, dates and caramel sauce ?
ReplyDeleteKate: it's not too bad. You can omit to serve it with the caramel sauce. It will still be good.
ReplyDeleteThe ultimate "sin" if you ask me....I would be able to bribe my entire family with a cake like this.
ReplyDeleteNina: I don't think that you would have any problems.
ReplyDeleteThis looks absolutely incredible!
ReplyDeleteI gotta try it!
Yummy in advance!

ReplyDeleteWow! Ca a l'air trop bon! Surtout avec la sauce caramel, quoique la puree de dates me semble une idee assez originale... je te fais confiance!
