I remember that, growing up, we did not have the chance to meet in the village, after school, in a nice park. We were fighting over a couple old swings, one rusty carousel and some monkey bars. Now, we live in Ottawa and we are very fortunate to live in a new development of our town. The city did an amazing job with the community parks and the younger kids have nice playgrounds. When I take my walks I can hear them laughing, having a good time and enjoying playing outside. It's so important for our children to take advantage of all the chances they have to do any kind of physical activity.
Did you know that:
- The Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines recommend at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigourous - intense physical activity for youth, aged 5-17, each day. In that age group only 5% are meeting the recommendations.
- One of the five leading global risk factors for mortality is physical inactivity.
- In 2014 a 10-year old child can expect to live roughly five years less than their parents - that is scary.
There are some communities across Canada that needs help with building a new play area for their children. Nationally, 67% of recreational facilities are more than 25 years old. You could help your community getting help to create a better place to play.
