Kraft Celebration Tour 2014 - Nominate your Community

When we were moving from province to province, when we were on our house hunting trips, we would do a tour of our new town to find out a bit more about it. We would stop at schools, arenas, the base sports centre and playgrounds. We have three children and when they were young they liked to play outside. In some communities we had access to nice parks with playgrounds and in other communities a little help to improve the play area would have been nice at the time.

I remember that, growing up, we did not have the chance to meet in the village, after school, in a nice park. We were fighting over a couple old swings, one rusty carousel and some monkey bars. Now, we live in Ottawa and we are very fortunate to live in a new development of our town. The city did an amazing job with the community parks and the younger kids have nice playgrounds. When I take my walks I can hear them laughing, having a good time and enjoying playing outside. It's so important for our children to take advantage of all the chances they have to do any kind of physical activity.

Did you know that:
  • The Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines recommend at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigourous - intense physical activity for youth, aged 5-17, each day. In that age group only 5% are meeting the recommendations.
  • One of the five leading global risk factors for mortality is physical inactivity.
  • In 2014 a 10-year old child can expect to live roughly five years less than their parents - that is scary.

There are some communities across Canada that needs help with building a new play area for their children. Nationally, 67% of recreational facilities are more than 25 years old. You could help your community getting help to create a better place to play.

Here's how you can do it with Kraft Celebration Tour 2014:

Nominate your community project for a chance to WIN $25,000 and a live TSN SportsCentre broadcast. RDS Sports 30 Le Magazine will broadcast from the winning Quebec community.

NEW for 2014 they are giving away a Grand Prize of $100,000. One of the Top 10 winning community finalists will battle in a online voting for the big prize. That's good news!

Now this is your chance to help make a difference in your community, build a better place to live, and highlighting your passion for healthy, active lifestyles. You could make a difference in your town.

Nominations are open until June 6, 2014.
