Smoked Havarti & Pear Grilled Cheese

grilled cheese

My parents were very busy on the farm. They did not really go on vacation for long periods of time and they did not go out for dinner or movies. Instead, during the winter, they would go dancing every Saturday night. My mom decided that we would prepare our own meal that night because she wanted a break, and also needed the time to get ready. In the afternoon, she would decide which dress to wear, put some makeup on, and I would help her dry her hair. She was very excited to finally have a couple hours of free time with my dad.

For the meal I would make grilled cheeses. My sisters and brother were anxiously waiting for me to make them. Some nights I would make classic grilled cheese; other nights it was ham grilled cheese. Today I made a Smoked Havarti and Pear Grilled cheese with Whole Grain bread, and this meal brought back so many memories of the past. Grilled cheese are a comfort food and are good any time of the day.

SMOKED HAVARTI & PEAR GRILLED CHEESE

Ingredients:
4 slices Whole Grain Bread
2 slices Smoked Havarti cheese
1/2 pear, sliced
20 ml butter

Directions:
1- Preheat skillet over medium heat.
2- Spread butter on one side of each slices of bread.
3- Place twos slices of bread in skillet, top with Smoked Havarti cheese and slices of pear. Top with a second slice of bread on top of sandwich.
4- Grilled until browned and flip over. Continue grilling until cheese is melted.

  11. That's wonderful that your parents had a standing date night. And I love your take on grilled cheese. There are so many sophisticated possibilities for what seems like a simple dish. I agree, it's one of the best comfort foods. My Mom used to pair it with cream of tomato soup, in the classic diner tradition.
